The
Pousadas of the Algarve, Portugal
|
| The
Pousada de Estoi was built in the old 18th-century Estoi Palace, which
originally belonged to the Viscount of Estoi, José Francisco da
Silva. It took several years to build the palace and a huge party was thrown
in the palace gardens on the 2nd of May 1909 to celebrate its completion.
After the Viscount’s death, the palace remained in the hands of his family
until 1987, at which time it was purchased by Faro Municipal Council. The
palace is currently undergoing renovation to convert it into the new Pousada
de Estoi. Set in nearly ten acres of land, this wonderful property
comprises a main building, former tea pavilions and fantastic Versailles-style
gardens, as well as old stables and cowsheds, which are being converted
to an events venue. The pousada is located in the small town of Estoi,
10km away from Faro, the Algarve’s capital city, and close to the Roman
Ruins at Milreu. |

of Estoi, José Francisco da Silva. The palace took 20 years to build
and in May 1909 a huge party was thrown in the gardens to celebrate the
inauguration. After the Viscount’s death, the palace remained in
the family until 1987, at which time it was acquired by the Faro Municipal
Council. Besides the main building, the tea pavilions and Versailles-style
gardens are still being renovated. The Palácio de Estoi is a new

| Sagres
- This purpose-built Pousada has a superb position on the cliff-top
overlooking Sagres fort and the lighthouse of Cape St Vicent, off which
many great sea battles have been fought by the likes of Admirals Drake,
Rodney, Nelson and Napier. Since its erection in 1960, the Pousada
has been constantly improved to cater for the increasing number of visitors
who want to see this most south westerly corner of Europe and to learn
something of the history of the man who gave his name to the Pousada, Infante
D. Henrique, is Portuguese for Prince Henry, the son of King João
I and his English-born queen Philippa Lancaster, who founded a navigation
school here early in the 15th century. As you sip your Sagres beer
on the terrace, remember Prince Henry planned expeditions which prodded
and probed their way down the west coast of Africa and then, via the Azores
and Madeira, to the New World. His fleets reached India and it is no coincidence
that Bombay is so named. It is a corruption of the Portuguese boa baía
(good bay). Goa, which has beaches to rival Portugal’s, remained Portuguese
territory until 1961. |

Pousada
de Sagres Infante
Style: Luxury Pousada
w/pool in a nature/scenic area
Pousada de Sagres, Infante,
is located in the fishing village of Sagres, Algarve. This hotel has a
superb position on the cliff-top overlooking Sagres fort and the lighthouse
of Cape St Vicent, the most south westerly corner of Europe. This
village has an important historical and maritime significance, from where,
500 years ago, Prince D. Henrique's caravels left to look for new countries.
The discovery of the cultural authenticity of the area and the possibility
of walking on desert beaches, allow you to forget about the real world.
From the fishing village comes the excellent fish and seafood that can
be quietly savoured at the Pousada de Sagres hotel, a contrast to the more
usual cosmopolitan bustle of the Algarve coast. |
| São
Brás de Alportel (near Faro) |
|
| São Brás
de Alportel - Built in the forties and launched
by the National Secretary of Propaganda, Dr. António Ferro, Pousada
S. Brás is with no doubt in a privileged location to get to know
the Algarve. Designed by the Architect Miguel Jacobetty, Pousada
S. Brás is one of the first seven Pousadas to appear in Portugal.
The Pousada started with 5 rooms, then had 14 rooms and, in 1997, enlarged
to 33. This is the spot where days drift by with serenity, nested
in the beautiful warm-earth tones of the country and complemented by the
deep blue in the horizon (Ria Formosa). But what is most impressing
in the new state building is the curved shapes and white walls resembling
to schools from another time, it conserved with the regional architecture
styles and decorated in same manor gastronomy. |
