3 reasons to visit Formentera in the Balearic Islands of SpainFormentera
is Mallorca and Ibiza’s little sister and is the smallest of the Balearic
Islands of Spain. Set out in the Mediterranean Sea, Formentera can easily
be reached by ferry. The island is less crowded and quieter than Ibiza
and is often used as a day-trip destination, due to its beautiful clear
waters and stretches of clean, sandy beach, backed by pine trees and dunes.
Formentera is ideal for those wishing for a quieter holiday without too
many crowds. 1. Far de la Mola LighthouseThe Far de la Mola lighthouse is close to the village of El Pilar de la Mola. Built in the 1880s, the lighthouse is a viewpoint offering spectacular views over the island and the Mediterranean Sea. It is wonderfully quiet up there and you are likely to spot peregrine falcons swooping over the cliffs where their nests are housed. On a clear day, you can see the island of Mallorca on the horizon.
A fascinating aspect about the lighthouse is a monument which states that Far de la Mola had inspired Jules Verne to write his science fiction novel “Off on a Comet” or “Hector Servadac” in 1877. The lighthouse is still working and is a guide to ships passing to the south of the Balearic Islands. 2. Ca Na Costa – Megalithic ruinsHistory lovers will appreciate these ruins, as Ca Na Costa is a funeral monument for people living back in the early Bronze Age, somewhere between 2000-1600 BC. The site is located in the north of Formentera, between Es Pujols and Estany Pudent.
The ruins were found in 1974 and made a major contribution to the history of the island, as up until then historians believed the oldest human settlements were from the Punic era. Excavations of the site revealed the remains of several people, along with lithic and ceramic artefacts used by them. 3. Calo Des Mort beachEven though Formentera is not as popular with tourists as the other Balearic Islands, the beaches of the island can get crowded during the summer months. We’ve got that covered! If looking for peace and quiet, beautiful scenery and clear waters, look no further than Calo Des Mort.
The beach is close to the village of Maryland, between Es Ram and Platja des Migjorn. Calo des Mort offers one of the best views on the island. The cove is appropriately in a shape of a smile and has crystal clear waters and dry docks for some small boats. Pack up a picnic and head to the beach for some pure relaxation. However, do bear in mind there is no lifeguard service at Calo des Mort, so don’t take any unnecessary risks. Enjoy
